Kinenokoro - When Kinenokoro

An annual grass of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). The culm branches at the base, grows obliquely upward, and is 20-70 cm tall. The edges of the leaf sheaths are hairless. From August to October, a cylindrical inflorescence is produced at the end of the culm. The branches of the inflorescence are very short, with a single flower spike and thorn-like bristles on the outside. These bristles are thought to be modified sterile branches. The spikelets are long and ovate, with blunt, pointed tips, and about 3 mm long. It grows in wastelands and roadsides throughout Japan, and is widely distributed in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. The name means "golden dog's baby grass" because the bristly sterile branches are golden yellow.

イネ科（APG分類：イネ科）の一年草。稈(かん)は基部で分枝して斜上し、高さ20～70センチメートル。葉鞘(ようしょう)の縁(へり)は無毛。8～10月、稈の先に円柱状の花序をつける。花序の枝はごく短く、1個の花穂とその外側に刺(とげ)状の剛毛がつく。この毛は、不稔(ふねん)性の枝の変化したものと考えられる。小穂は長卵形で先が鈍くとがり、長さ約3ミリメートル。日本全土の荒れ地や道端に生え、広く北半球の温帯に分布する。名は金狗(きんいぬ)の子草の意味で、剛毛状の不稔枝が黄金色になるためである。
