Pech‐Merle

Japanese: ペシュ・メルル(英語表記)Pech‐Merle
Pech‐Merle
A Paleolithic cave painting site in the village of Cabrerets in the Rhode department in southwestern France. Also known as Pecq Merle, it was discovered in 1922 by a local boy. The cave is 2km long and has a complex plan. Many figures are depicted, including bisons from the Périgord and Magdalenian periods, horses, cows, mammoths, handprints, spots, and human figures. In the "main room" two horses are depicted with their rears facing each other using a combination of line drawings and flat paint, and three negative handprints associated with these horses have a magical meaning of capturing the animals in question.
