… The next century was a period of revival of literature and religion under Otto I, and many poets and scholars were born from monasteries in various regions. Among them, the most notable was the development of Roswitha of Gandersheim's six prose plays based on the stories of martyrs, which is a masterpiece of medieval Latin religious drama, and the mass sequentia, which plays an important role in church music. This was already pioneered by Balbulus Notker and others in the late 9th century, and spread from the monastery of St. Gall to various regions, eventually producing the Rose Sequence (author unknown) with ``Tender thoughts of Jesus'' in the 12th century, followed by the Golden Sequence (by S. Langton or Pope Innocent III) with ``Come, precious Spirit''. Roswitha also produced works such as ``The Martyrdom of Saint Agnes'' and ``The Life of Saint Pelagius''. …

…　つぎの世紀はオットー1世による文教の復興期で，各地の修道院を中心に詩人･学者が輩出したが，中に特筆すべきは，中世ラテン宗教劇の圧巻であるガンダースハイムのロスウィータの多く殉教者伝に取材した6編の散文劇と，教会音楽に重要な地位を占めるミサの続唱(セクエンティアsequentia)の発展である。これはすでに9世紀後半ノトカーBalbulus Notkerらを先行者とし，ザンクト･ガレン修道院から各地へ広がり，やがて12世紀に〈やさしきイエスの思いは〉の《バラの続唱》(作者不詳)，つづいて〈来ませ尊き御霊〉の《黄金続唱》(S.ラングトンまたは教皇インノケンティウス3世作)などを生んだ。なおロスウィータには《聖女アグネスの殉教》《聖ペラギウス伝》などの作もある。…
