A Buddhist from Silla (Korea). Founder of the Wonhyo sect. His posthumous name was Daisho Wajo Kokushi. His secular surname was Seol. He became a monk at the age of 29 at Hwangnyongsa Temple and excelled in legal debates. In 650, upon hearing of the rise of the Hosso sect, he aimed to travel to China with Uisang, but gave up midway and returned to Korea. After that, he had a son, Seok Song (date of birth and death unknown), and behaved like a layman, calling himself a page layman, while working to promote Buddhism, especially the Avatamsaka sect. His works include the "Vajrayana Sutra Treatise" in three volumes, the "Avatamsaka Sutra Commentary" in ten volumes (one volume still exists), the "Awakening of Faith Commentary" in two volumes, the "Nehan Shuyo" in one volume, and the "Jumon Wajoron" in two volumes (some remain), and he had a great influence on the teachings of the Fa Zang of the Chinese Avatamsaka sect.
