Odenwald (English spelling)

A hilly mountain range in central Germany, east of the Rhine Graben. It is about 80 km long and 40 km wide. Most of it is in the state of Hesse. It is mainly made of intrusive granite, and its elevation is 400-500 m, lower in the north. Its northern limit is the Main River Valley, its southern limit is the Neckar River Valley, and it continues to the Black Forest in the south. The western slope that descends to the graben is relatively steep, but there are vineyards and other structures, and the forests increase toward the east. The mountain road that runs from Heidelberg on the southern edge to Darmstadt via Weinheim and Bensheim is called Bergstraße, and is known for its many historical sites and recreational spots. The mountain range was the hunting ground of the Burgundians, known for the song of the Nibelungens, so the road that crosses the mountains from Worms to Würzburg from east to west is called Nibelungenstraße, and is visited by many people.

ドイツ中部，ライン地溝帯東側にある丘陵性山地。長さ約 80km，幅約 40km。大部分がヘッセン州に属する。おもに貫入性花崗岩から成り，標高 400～500mで北方が低い。北限はマイン河谷，南限はネッカー河谷で，南はシュワルツワルトに続く。地溝に下る西斜面は比較的急であるがブドウ畑などがあり，東方ほど森林が多くなる。南縁のハイデルベルクからワインハイム，ベンスハイムを経てダルムシュタットにいたる山沿いの道は，ベルクシュトラーセと呼ばれ，史跡に富み，行楽地が多いことで知られる。山地は『ニーベルンゲンの歌』で知られるブルグント族の狩猟地であったため，ウォルムスから山地を東西に横断してウュルツブルクへいたる道はニーベルンゲンシュトラーセと呼ばれ，訪れる人が多い。
