A temperament with a problem in the balance of opposing sensitivities, sensitivity and insensitivity. Sometimes they do not respond quickly to stimuli, but they are easily tense and show extraordinary stubbornness. They are elegant and sensitive, but also controlling and selfish, solitary dreamers, and insensitive and lacking in humanity. They are often seen in poets, theorists, and strategists. They tend to have a healthy, thin build. One of the central concepts of E. Kretschmer's theory of constitution and personality. In American psychiatry, it is often called schizoid personality. The concept of schizoid personality is sometimes used descriptively as almost synonymous with Kretschmer's schizophrenia, and sometimes used to explain the underlying dynamic characteristics from a psychoanalytic perspective.
