A city in midwestern Nigeria, located about 170 km northeast of Ilorin. Originally a small Beni settlement, it was conquered by the Nupe kingdom around 1531, and then by the Fulani kingdom in 1806, and later became their capital. It then reached its peak and became the most powerful kingdom in central Nigeria, trading with Britain. It came under British rule in the early 20th century. Nupe make up the majority of the population. In addition to agricultural products, it is famous for traditional crafts such as brass, copperwork, beadwork, strawwork, dyeing, and pottery. The town is surrounded by a wall, and castles and buildings from the Fulani kingdom era remain. Population 110,800 (1991 estimate).

ナイジェリア中西部の都市。イロリン東北東約 170kmに位置。元来ベニ族の小集落であったが，1531年頃ヌペ族の王国が征服，さらに 1806年フラニ族の王国に征服され，のち，その首都となった。その後最盛期を迎え，中部ナイジェリア最強の王国となり，イギリスと交易。 20世紀初頭からイギリス統治下に入った。ヌペ族が住民の大半を占める。農産物の集散のほか真鍮，銅細工，ビーズ玉細工，わら細工，染色，製陶などの伝統工芸で有名。町は城壁で囲まれ，フラニ族の王国時代の城や建物が残る。人口 11万 800 (1991推計) 。
