An 8th century aristocrat. Poet and Man'yo tanka poet. Father of Takatsugu. Descended from the main line of the Mononobe clan, a prominent clan in the Yamato Imperial Court. In 738 (Tenpyo 10), he was involved in a love affair with Kume Wakame, widow of Fujiwara no Ugai, and was exiled to Tosa Province (Kochi Prefecture). The legend in "Kaifuso" reveals that he was good-looking and handsome. The collection of poems "Seihimo", which expresses his feelings during his time in Tosa, has not been preserved. He later returned to politics, and in 750 (Tenpyo 18), he was selected as an ambassador to the Tang Dynasty. Perhaps because of his academic talent and good looks, the plan was cancelled. 8世紀の貴族。詩人,万葉歌人。宅嗣の父。大和朝廷の名族物部氏の本流の出身。天平10(738)年藤原宇合の未亡人,久米若売と恋愛事件を起こし,土佐国(高知県)に流された。『懐風藻』の伝には,その容姿風采の優れていたことがみえ,美男子ぶりがうかがえる。土佐での感懐を詠んだ詩集『銜悲藻』は伝わらない。のち政界に復帰,天平18年には遣唐大使に選ばれた。その学才,容姿がかわれたのであろうが,計画は中止となった。天平勝宝2(750)年,従三位,中納言,中務卿で死去した。<参考文献>東野治之「天平十八年の遣唐使派遣計画」(『正倉院文書と木簡の研究』)
