He was the lord of Tanabe Castle in Kii Province (Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture) in the early Edo period, and was a retainer of the Kii Tokugawa family. He was born in Mikawa Province (Aichi Prefecture). His father was Mokusuke Motoyoshi, and Shigenobu was his younger brother. His childhood name was Senpukumaru, and he was commonly known as Hikoshiro, later Hikobei, and he was appointed to carry a sword. He served Tokugawa Ieyasu from an early age, and achieved military success in many battles, and was also skilled in military strategy. He became a close aide to Ieyasu in Sunpu, and participated in the shogunate government as a member of the Toshiyori-shu. In 1610 (Keicho 15), he became the guardian of Ieyasu's 10th son, Yorinobu. In 1619 (Genna 5), ​​he followed Yorinobu to Kii as a retainer, and was given a fief of 38,800 koku. 江戸時代前期の紀伊国田辺城(和歌山県田辺市)城主,紀伊徳川家の付家老。三河国(愛知県)生まれ。父は杢助基能,重信は弟。幼名千福丸,通称は彦四郎,のち彦兵衛,帯刀に任ぜられる。幼少より徳川家康に仕え,多くの合戦で武功をあげ,また武略にも優れていた。駿府の家康の側近となり年寄衆として幕政に参与した。慶長15(1610)年家康の10男頼宣の守役となる。元和5(1619)年,付家老として頼宣に従い紀伊に移り3万8800石を領した。性格は実直で,ときには若輩であった頼宣を諫めたという。<参考文献>安藤直雄編『藤厳公伝記』
