Yabe Sadanori

A shogunate official in the late Edo period. Commonly known as Hikogoro, he was Sakon no Shogen and Suruga no Kami. His father was Sadanori. He was appointed magistrate of Sakai in 1831, and magistrate of Osaka Nishimachi in 1834. It is said that he formed a friendship with Oshio Heihachiro while in his position as magistrate of Osakamachi, but Oshio denounced Yabe's corruption during the uprising, and criticized him as a "traitor" who was causing chaos in the country. In 1842 he became magistrate of finances, and in 1843 he became magistrate of Edo Minamimachi. He came into conflict with senior councilor Mizuno Tadakuni over the order to dissolve stock associations and reforms in Edo, and was dismissed after eight months in office due to the schemes of inspector Torii Yozo, who linked him to corruption cases at the magistrate's office. During questioning, he was reprimanded for pleading his innocence to an acquaintance, and was placed in permanent custody in Kuwana Domain, with his title removed. In protest, he starved himself to death. His years of birth and death are according to those on his gravestone.

江戸後期の幕臣。通称は彦五郎。左近将監,駿河守。父は定令。天保2(1831)年堺奉行,4年大坂西町奉行。大坂町奉行在任中は大塩平八郎と親交を結んだといわれるが,大塩は蜂起に当たり,矢部の不正を弾劾し,国を乱す「奸侫」と槍玉にあげた。7年勘定奉行,12年江戸南町奉行となる。株仲間解散令や江戸市中の改革をめぐり老中水野忠邦と対立,奉行所与力の不正事件と絡めた目付鳥居耀蔵の画策により在任8カ月で罷免された。取り調べ中に無実を知人に訴えたことを咎められ,桑名藩へ永預け,改易の処分を受けた。これに抗議し,絶食して死んだ。なお生没年は墓碑による。
