A plant that reproduces by cell division rather than sexual reproduction, specifically, a prokaryotic organism that does not have a nucleus bounded by a nuclear membrane, i.e., bacteria and blue-green algae. It was popular as one of the classification categories in H. Engler's plant classification system, which became common from the late 19th century to the 20th century, but is not used much nowadays. Engler distinguished between the red algae (blue-green algae), which have chlorophyll and perform photosynthesis, and the red fungi (bacteria), which do not.

有性生殖をせずに細胞分裂によってふえる植物という意味で，具体的には，核膜で境された核をもたない原核生物，すなわち細菌および藍藻類に一致する。 19世紀末から 20世紀にかけて一般的になった H.エングラーの植物分類体系における分類区分の一つとして普及したが，現在はあまり用いられない。エングラーは，分裂植物のなかに，葉緑素を有して光合成を行う分裂藻類 (藍藻類) と，これをもたない分裂菌類 (細菌類) を区別した。
