…He was a powerful local farmer with experience as a village chief (head of 100 households), but in 611 (Daye 7), he turned to banditry in protest against Emperor Yang's forcible invasion of Goguryeo. He later distinguished himself with his chivalrous personality and bold action, and in 618, with the support of a wide range of people from farmers to scholars, he founded the Xia Dynasty, which ruled over almost the entire Hebei region. He governed his territory well and became the Tang's greatest enemy, but was defeated and killed in the battle of Hulao Pass (Henan Province) in 621 (Wude 4). …
