A dry cell widely used in flashlights, radios, and other devices. It has a rated voltage of 1.5V. It is also called a Leclanché cell because it was invented by Georges Leclanché around 1866. A carbon rod serves as the anode, which is wrapped in a mixture mainly made of manganese dioxide, and a zinc can serves as the cathode. The electrolyte solution is a mixed aqueous solution of ammonium chloride and zinc chloride, and the liquid is made into a paste using paper, cotton, starch, etc. to prevent it from spilling. It has since evolved into the alkaline manganese dry cell, which uses potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte solution.
