Atmospheric tides

Tidal cycle fluctuation phenomenon that occurs in the atmosphere. The gravitational force of celestial bodies acts not only on the ocean but also on the atmosphere, causing tidal phenomena. In the ocean, the lunar semidiurnal tide (12.4 hours in duration) is the largest, but in the atmosphere, the solar semidiurnal tide (12 hours in duration) is dominant. This is because solar radiation causes the ozone and water vapor in the atmosphere to expand thermally, causing forced oscillations. Air pressure changes due to tides are much smaller than those caused by high and low pressure systems, so they do not show up in normal weather observations.

大気圏内におこる潮汐周期の変動現象。天体の引力は、海ばかりでなく、大気にも作用して潮汐現象がおこる。海の場合は太陰半日潮（周期12.4時間）がいちばん大きいが、大気の場合は太陽半日潮（周期12時間）が卓越している。日射により大気中のオゾンや水蒸気が熱膨張して、強制振動をおこすためである。潮汐による気圧変化は高・低気圧の気圧変化よりはるかに小さいので、普通の気象観測では現れてこない。
