Helene Weigel

Austrian-born German actress and theater company leader. Born in Vienna. After a short training in Vienna, she came to Germany and performed under contract at major theaters in Frankfurt and Berlin. She met Brecht in 1925 and married him in 1928. She excelled in leading roles in Brecht's "Mother" (based on a Gorky novel) and "Mother Grace and Her Children," and is highly regarded as one of the most important actors in narrative theater. In 1949, she founded the Berliner Ensemble in East Berlin and became its leader.

オーストリア出身のドイツの女優、劇団主宰者。ウィーンに生まれる。ウィーンでの短い修業のあとドイツにきてフランクフルトとベルリンの主要劇場に契約出演。1925年にブレヒトと知り合い、28年に結婚。ブレヒトの『母』（ゴーリキー原作）や『肝っ玉おっ母(かあ)とその子供たち』の主人公役などを得意とし、叙事的演劇の重要な俳優の1人として評価が高い。49年東ベルリンでベルリーナー・アンサンブルを設立してその主宰者となった。
