A Presbyterian confession of faith established by the Council of Westminster. On October 12, 1643, the English Long Parliament convened leading theologians and religious leaders at Westminster Abbey to determine a new, best biblical Reformed creed that would unify England, Scotland, and Ireland. A draft was prepared in 1646, and the final creed was approved by Parliament on June 20, 1648, with some corrections. It consists of 33 chapters and summarizes the international Calvinist beliefs on all Christian doctrines from Creation to the Last Judgment. After the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, it lost its official status in England, but was accepted by the Church of Scotland, Presbyterians, Congregationalists, and Baptists in the United States and the United Kingdom. It is the standard of faith for the Presbyterian Church in the English world. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
