The unit of work in the CGS system. Its symbol is erg. It is the work done when a force of 1 dyne moves an object 1 centimeter in the direction of that force. It is equal to 1/10 million of a joule. It was proposed by the British Academy in 1873, and its name comes from the Greek word meaning "to work."
