The second long-lasting and stable dynasty that succeeded the Ly dynasty of Vietnam. 1225-1400. Also written as Trần dynasty. The ancestors of the Trần dynasty are said to be from Fujian or Guilin, China, and for generations they lived in Tạc Mộc (Jimo Township) in Nam Dinh, where they made their living as fishermen or pirates. At the end of the Ly dynasty, Tran Ly (Chen Li) protected Ly Hue Tong (Lee Huizong), who had fled to the south after a coup by powerful officials, and married him to his daughter (former empress). He then recaptured Hanoi and became emperor, and his power rapidly expanded. During the civil war at the end of the Ly dynasty, a member of the family, Tran Tu Do (Chen Shou Du), served as a commander in chief of the palace and defeated local lords, and even succeeded in killing the last emperor of the Ly dynasty, Thiếu Hoang (Zhao Huang), under his nephew, Tran Khanh (Chen Xin, later Thanh Tong).
