C 3 H 8 (44.10). CH 3 CH 2 CH 3 . A component of wet gas. Dissolved in crude oil. A by-product of the cracking or reforming of petroleum hydrocarbons. It is produced by concentrating it from the above gas and separating it by low-temperature fractional distillation. Its structure is that of ethane, with one of the hydrogen atoms replaced by a methyl group, and it has an angle of ∠CC-C112°. It is a colorless gas that is heavier than air and has a weak, characteristic odor. Melting point: -187.69 °C, boiling point: -42.07 °C. Explosive range: 2.4 to 9.5% by volume. It has low chemical reactivity, but is used as a raw material in the process of synthesizing aromatic hydrocarbons using zeolite catalysts. It is used as a fuel as liquefied petroleum gas, either alone or in a mixture with propene, butane, butene, etc. It is also used as a solvent for dewaxing in lubricant refining.
