A long Vietnamese epic poem written in Chinese and Chu Nom. It is also known as "Jin Yun Qiao Xin Fu" or "Tearful Sinners Xin Sing". It was translated by Nguyen Du (1765-1820), a scholar at the Can Zhengtian Palace of the Nguyen Dynasty, under the pen name of Qing Xin Cairen, from the anonymous early Chinese Qing Dynasty chapter novel "Jin Yun Qiao Fu". It is a 3,524-line translation of verse in the typical Vietnamese six-eight style. It is not merely a piece of translated literature, but has perfected a typical form of ethnic poetry using slang, and made a major contribution to the formation of the modern Vietnamese language. It is also regarded as a piece of national literature that skillfully expresses the psychology and ethics of the Vietnamese people, but it remains a Chinese tale of a beautiful woman on the move, set in the Ming dynasty and telling the tale of Thuy Kieu (Cui Qiao), who left her lover Kim Trong (Kim Chong) in the care of her sister Thuy Van (Cui Yun) and entered into a world of hardship. The title is taken from one character each of the names of the characters in the story.
