King of the St. John dynasty of Germany (reigned 1152-1190), Holy Roman Emperor (reigned 1155-1190). Known as Barbarossa (Red Beard). Nephew of Conrad III. He used feudal relationships to concentrate power and overthrew his arch enemy Henry (the Lion), but this led to the establishment of the imperial prince status and the decline of royal authority. He struggled against the resistance of the Pope and the League of Lombard cities in his six Italian campaigns. He drowned in Asia Minor during the Third Crusade. → Related articles Alexander [III] | Henry [VI] | League of Lombard Cities Frederick [I] [Friedrich]→ Related article Prussia Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
