This glass is made by utilizing the phase separation phenomenon, in which uniform glass is separated into two or more phases by heat treatment. When the second phase produced by phase separation is dissolved with sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid, the resulting area becomes void, resulting in porous glass with countless continuous pores measuring a few nanometers to a few micrometers. The pore surface area is large, up to several hundred square meters per gram, and by changing the heat treatment conditions, it is possible to obtain porous glass with the desired pore size and surface area. In addition, because it is an inorganic material, unlike organic materials, it is not attacked by bacteria. Taking advantage of these characteristics, the pore surface can be modified with ion exchange resin for use in isotope separation, or loaded with specific enzymes for use as a bioreactor.
