A war chronicle from the late Muromachi period. The popular edition is in three volumes and three books. Both the author and the year of its creation are unknown. It describes the course of the Onin War in the same vein as the Taiheiki, but has little literary value. The main part is divided into 30 sections starting with "The Days of Harmony Before the War," and begins with the mismanagement of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, who was seen as the cause of the war, and ends with the death of Yamana Mochitoyo in 1473 (Bunmei 5). As it is a war chronicle, its historical value cannot be fully trusted. However, it is thought that the original was written based on records from the time of the war, and although some embellishments have been observed during the transcription process, it is generally considered to be more reliable than other war chronicles. The oldest manuscript is one with a colophon dated 1563 and is housed at the Ryumon Bunko Library, and old Kan'ei typeset copies remain in various locations. It is included in the War Section of the Gunsho Ruiju. [Akira Imatani] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
