Palmares

Japanese: Palmares
Palmares

...Quilombos were isolated settlements of 50 to several thousand houses in dense forests or remote mountain areas, fortified with fences and moats. They engaged in farming, hunting, and fishing, and also raided white settlements and plantations to obtain weapons, clothing, tools, and women. Most quilombos were short-lived, but there are also known examples such as the Palmares Republic in Pernambuco, which lasted for about 90 years until 1694, and a slave kingdom in Minas Gerais with 10 settlements and 20,000 people at the end of the 18th century. The fugitive slave societies of Spanish colonies, called Palenques, were formed mainly in the Caribbean and tropical continental regions, and some of them still retain their autonomy today, such as the black kingdom of Suriname, known as Palenque, the largest palenque in the Western Hemisphere.
