1867‐1939 British illustrator. Born as the third son in a typical middle-class family, he aspired to become an illustrator while working at an insurance company. He gained popularity with his beautiful and humorous fairy paintings in "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" (1906) and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (1908), and became a new-age illustrator who replaced the simple styles of Greenaway and W. Crane. A major factor in this was the practical application of multicolor lithographic printing, which faithfully reproduced his extremely delicate watercolors.
