Arthur Rackham

British illustrator. Born as the third son in a typical middle-class family, he aspired to become an illustrator while working at an insurance company. He gained popularity with his beautiful and humorous fairy paintings in "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" (1906) and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (1908), and became a new-age illustrator who replaced the simple styles of Greenaway and W. Crane. A major factor in this was the practical application of multicolor lithographic printing, which faithfully reproduced his extremely delicate watercolors. [Aramata Hiroshi]

イギリスの挿絵画家。典型的な中流家庭の三男に生まれる。保険会社勤めのかたわら挿絵画家を志した。《ケンジントン公園のピーター･パン》(1906)や，《夏の夜の夢》(1908)の美しくユーモラスな妖精画によって人気を博し，グリーナウェーやW.クレーンの質素な画風にとって替わる新時代の挿絵画家となった。彼のきわめて繊細な水彩画を忠実に再現する多色平版印刷の実用化が，その大きな要因であろう。【荒俣宏】
