The common name for paper money issued by the United States government in 1862-1863 during the Civil War as a temporary measure to raise funds for the war effort. It was so named because the back of the bills was green. A total of $450 million was issued in three issues. This caused inflation, and its value fell to one-third of its face value in 1864. After the Panic of 1873, the third political party, the Greenback Party, demanded more bills, but after 1879 they were replaced with gold coins. → Related article Populist Party Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
