The common name for paper money issued by the United States government in 1862-1863 during the Civil War as a temporary measure to raise funds for the war effort. It was so named because the back of the bills was green. A total of $450 million was issued in three issues. This caused inflation, and its value fell to one-third of its face value in 1864. After the Panic of 1873, the third political party, the Greenback Party, demanded more bills, but after 1879 they were replaced with gold coins.

南北戦争の時代，1862年―1863年に合衆国政府が戦費調達の臨時処置として発行した紙幣の通称。裏面が緑色であったのでこう呼ばれた。発行総額は３回にわたり４億5000万ドル。インフレをひき起こし，その価値は1864年に額面の1/3に低落。1873年の恐慌後は第３政党のグリーンバック党による増発の要求もあったが，1879年以降は金貨をもって回収された。
