Bulawayo - Bulawayo (English spelling)

Bulawayo - Bulawayo (English spelling)

A city in southwestern Zimbabwe, southern Africa. It is the center of the Matabeleland region and has a developed commercial and industrial base. It has a population of 621,742 (1992). It was the residence of King Lobengula of the Ndebele people from 1871, but in 1893 it was occupied by British troops led by Jameson and the king was killed. Bulawayo means "place of slaughter" in the Ndebele language. After that, the number of white settlers increased rapidly, and in 1896 the resistance of the Ndebele people was put down, and the city developed with the opening of the railway. It is now a railway crossroads to the capital Harare, Victoria Falls, Gaborone in Botswana, and Beitbridge in the south, and is a distribution center for goods. There are more than 600 companies, and industries such as food processing, textiles, vehicle and cement manufacturing are located here.
