The common name for the main branch of the Orthodox Church of Christ in Japan, located in Surugadai, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, and also for the Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral. Construction began in March 1884 (Meiji 17), and was completed and consecrated (opened) on March 8, 1891. As a newspaper article reporting this the following day mentioned "Nicolai-do," it is believed that the name was given from the beginning in honor of the Russian missionary Nicholas, the founder of the Orthodox Church of Christ in Japan. The original design of the cathedral was by Mikhail Arefyevich Shchurupov (1815-1901) of St. Petersburg, and the actual design is said to have been done by the Englishman Conder. The builder was Nagasato Yasusuke (1849-1911). It is made of brick and stone, with a copper roof. It is a valuable example of the Byzantine church style that was passed down to Japan. The bell tower collapsed and the interior was burned in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 (Taisho 12), so restoration work began in 1927 (Showa 2) and was completed in 1929. The architect was Okada Shinichiro, and the dome, roof shape, and interior were changed, but most of the walls remain the same except for the window frames. It was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1962 (Showa 37).
