Armenian composer active in Russia (Soviet Union). Born in Khodzhol, Georgia. Spent his teenage years in Tbilisi, where he was familiar with folk music of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. After studying at the Faculty of Science and Technology of Moscow University, he transferred to the Gnessin Musical College, where he received his first formal musical education at the age of 19. He then studied under Myaskovsky and others at the Moscow Conservatory. After composing works such as Symphony No. 1 (1934), he established his fame with Piano Concerto (1936), dedicated to Oborin, and Violin Concerto (1940), dedicated to Oistrakh. Known for his dynamic style based on folk music idiom, his later masterpieces include the ballet music "Gayane" (1942, revised in 1957), the orchestral suite "Un ballo in maschera" (1944), "Cello Concerto" (1946), the ballet music "Spartacus" (1954), and "Sonata Fantasia" for solo cello (1974). ロシア(ソ連)で活躍したアルメニアの作曲家。現ジョージアのコジョリ生れ。10代までトビリシで過ごし,ジョージア,アルメニア,アゼルバイジャンの民俗音楽に親しんだ。モスクワ大学理工学部に在学ののちグネーシン音楽大学に転学し,19歳で初めて正規の音楽教育を受ける。続いてモスクワ音楽院でミヤスコフスキーらに師事。《交響曲第1番》(1934年)などを経て,オボーリンに献呈された《ピアノ協奏曲》(1936年),オイストラフに献呈された《バイオリン協奏曲》(1940年)で名声を確立した。民俗音楽の語法を土台にした躍動感あふれる作風で知られ,その後の代表作に,バレエ音楽《ガヤネー》(1942年,改訂1957年),管弦楽組曲《仮面舞踏会》(1944年),《チェロ協奏曲》(1946年),バレエ音楽《スパルタクス》(1954年),無伴奏チェロのための《ソナタ・ファンタジア》(1974年)などがある。自作の指揮でも知られ,1963年に初来日。→ロストロポービチ
