Thermal decomposition

The decomposition of molecules by heating. Used as a term for photolysis, radiolysis, electrolysis, etc. In many cases, pyrolysis produces free radicals that react with other molecules. The walls of the container often act as a catalyst to initiate a thermal reaction. Most combustion reactions belong to this category, in which the heat generated by combustion promotes the thermal decomposition of other molecules. An extreme example of this is an explosion reaction. Additionally, most industrially important reactions, such as the thermal decomposition of naphtha and the thermal decomposition of polymerization initiators at relatively low temperatures, are pyrolysis reactions.

加熱によって分子が分解すること．光分解，放射線分解，電気分解などに対する用語として用いられる．多くの場合，熱分解では遊離基が生じ，それがほかの分子と反応する．熱反応の開始には容器の壁などが触媒となっていることが多い．ほとんどの燃焼反応がこれに属し，燃焼による発熱が別の分子の熱分解を助長する．その極端な場合が爆発反応である．また，ナフサの熱分解や重合開始剤の比較的低温での熱分解など，工業的に重要な反応はほとんど熱分解反応である．
