Ooitokakegai (precious wentletrap)

A gastropod shell of the family Pectiniidae in the class Gastropoda of the phylum Mollusca. It is found in the western Pacific Ocean south of the Boso Peninsula and as far as Australia. It lives in sandy mud at depths of 50 to 100 meters. Its shell is 55 mm high and 35 mm in diameter, with a pure white surface that sometimes takes on a pale brown hue. The spiral layer has around 10 strong longitudinal ribs that connect the upper and lower spiral layers, giving it the appearance of a thread, hence its name. The shell opening is oval and the lid is black and leathery. The shell's neat and beautiful shape makes it highly prized by collectors and expensive, so much so that it is said that imitations have even been made.

軟体動物門腹足綱イトカケガイ科の巻き貝。房総半島以南の西太平洋に分布し、オーストラリアに及ぶ。水深50～100メートルの砂泥にすむ。殻高55ミリメートル、殻径35ミリメートルに達し、殻表は純白色、ときに淡い褐色を帯びる。螺層(らそう)には10本内外の強い縦肋(じゅうろく)があり、これが上下の螺層にわたってつながり、糸をかけたようにみえるのが名の由来である。殻口は卵円形で、蓋(ふた)は黒く革質。殻の形態が清楚(せいそ)で美しく、収集家に珍重され高価であったため、模造品までつくられたという話があるほどである。
