C ₄ H ₄ O (68.07). It is present in tar obtained from pine trees. It is obtained by heating and decarbonating 2-furancarboxylic acid, which is obtained by oxidizing furfural. It is a colorless liquid with a chloroform odor. Boiling point: 32 °C (10 kPa). 0.9371. 1.4216. It is easily soluble in ethanol, ether, and petroleum ether, and slightly soluble in water. It is stable in alkali, but resinifies in inorganic acids. It turns green when pine wood reacts with hydrochloric acid. Many furan derivatives exist as components of essential oils in plants. Furan is relatively less aromatic and has a high diene character, so it is prone to Diels-Alder reactions. It is not reduced by sodium amalgam, but hydrogenation with a nickel catalyst produces tetrahydrofuran. Substitution reactions with cationoid reagents tend to occur at the α position. When heated with ammonia or hydrogen sulfide in the presence of a dehydrating agent, pyrrole and thiophene are produced, respectively. Caution is required as the vapor has an anesthetic effect. The lethal concentration for rats is 30,400 ppm. Also, like ether, it forms peroxides, so care must be taken when distilling. [CAS 110-00-9]

C₄H₄O(68.07)．マツの木から得られるタール中に存在する．フルフラールを酸化すると得られる2-フランカルボン酸を，加熱脱炭酸すると得られる．クロロホルム臭をもつ無色の液体．沸点32 ℃(10 kPa)．0.9371．1.4216．エタノール，エーテル，石油エーテルに易溶，水に微溶．アルカリには安定であるが，無機酸では樹脂化する．マツ材-塩酸反応で緑色を呈する．フラン誘導体は植物の精油成分として存在するものが多い．フランは芳香族性が比較的小さく，ジエン性が高いため，ディールス-アルダー反応を起こしやすい．ナトリウムアマルガムでは還元されないが，ニッケル触媒による水素添加により，テトラヒドロフランを生成する．カチオノイド試薬による置換反応はα位で起こりやすい．脱水剤の存在下にアンモニアあるいは硫化水素と加熱すると，それぞれピロール，チオフェンを生成する．蒸気は麻酔作用があるので注意を要する．ラットの致死濃度は30400 ppm．また，エーテルと同様に過酸化物を形成するので，蒸留には注意が必要である．[CAS 110-00-9]
