Royal road theory

... The Chinese consciousness is nothing but the crystallization of a strong sense of pride and confidence in one's own country's superiority, a pride in being the most culturally prominent and geographically central place in the world. Similar ideas can be found in ancient Babylonia, Egypt, India, and other places, but one of the differences between these and the Chinese consciousness is the intervention of the theory of the kingly way (virtuous governance). The benevolent rule of the king (Son of Heaven) spreads in all directions, and even remote barbarians are ``so far away that there is nothing that cannot be reached,'' meaning that they are all expected to submit to China.
