A perennial plant of the genus Alternanthera in the Amaranthaceae family. Its Japanese name is Moyoubiyu. In horticulture, it is known by the name of a closely related genus, Akilanthus. It is also sometimes sold under the old genus name Terranthera. It has long, spatula-shaped leaves that grow opposite each other, and many species have red or yellow leaves or spots. It is often used as a supporting plant in flower beds from summer to autumn, but you can also enjoy its beautiful leaf color by planting it densely in a carpet-like pattern. It is naturally evergreen, but is not cold-resistant. It stops growing when the temperature drops below 10°C, and dies quickly if exposed to frost. To overwinter, keep it in a bright room at 5°C or higher. The leaf color becomes more vivid when exposed to direct sunlight. It can be propagated by cuttings from spring to summer.
