Shishido clan

Japanese: 宍戸氏 - ししどうじ

A powerful clan in Hitachi and Aki provinces in the Middle Ages. The founder of the Shishido clan, Iemasa, is said to be the fourth son of Hatta Tomoie, a branch of the Utsunomiya clan in Shimotsuke. Iemasa inherited some of his father Tomoie's territories, including Hitachi Kozuru Manor, land in Aki-Takata County, and Fukase in Bitchu, and took the surname Shishido (present-day Tomobe Town, Ibaraki Prefecture) from Kozuru Manor. The family often held the position of Hitachi Shugo throughout the Kamakura period. This appears to have been due to internal conflicts within the main branch of the Oda clan and the fact that the head of the family was still a child, and they assumed this position in place of the legitimate line. During the Nanboku-cho period, they sided with the Ashikaga clan throughout, in stark contrast to the decline of the Oda clan, which sided with the Southern Court.

中世の常陸および安芸国の豪族。宍戸氏の祖家政は下野宇都宮氏の庶流八田知家の四男と伝える。家政は父知家の所領のうち常陸小鶴荘，安芸高田郡内の地，備中深瀬などを継承，小鶴荘内の地宍戸(現，茨城県友部町)を名字とした。同氏は鎌倉時代をつうじて，しばしば常陸守護の地位についている。これは本宗の小田氏の内訌や当主の幼年に際し，嫡流に代わってその地位を得たもののようである。南北朝時代には終始足利氏に味方し，南朝についた小田氏の衰退と対照的な姿をみせている。
