The name means "little brothers" in Italian. It originally referred to a mendicant order, but later it referred to a group of monks within the Franciscan order that flourished from the 13th to 15th centuries that had a tendency to splinter and become heretical. This sect advocated extreme poverty. It was dissolved in the 15th century. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
