Duchy of Alemanni

...Swabian (Alemanni) society consisted of many sub-tribes with chiefdoms (kings and petty kings), but in the 5th century it moved towards unification. However, in 496 they were defeated by Clovis of the Frankish Kingdom, and in 536 the whole territory came under the control of the Frankish kings, instead of under the protection of the Ostrogoths, and the Alemanni Principality was established, ruled by an archduke appointed by the Frankish king. In the 7th century, tribal law was established, Christianization progressed, and from the 8th century onwards, during the Carolingian period, the Grafschaft system was introduced instead of the archduke system. ...
