1864‐1927 Romanian politician. Born into one of Romania's leading political families, his father, Ion Brǎtianu (1821-91), was a participant in the Wallachian Revolution of 1848 and one of the founders of the National Liberal Party, a leading bourgeois political party, in 1866. He also became the party's leader from 1909 to 1927, served as a minister, and was prime minister during World War I and from 1922 to 1926. His anti-populist nationalist policies are well reflected in his suppression of the peasant revolt of 1907, his insistence on participation in the Second Balkan War, and his policy of intervention in Russia and Hungary immediately after the revolution.
