Imru' al-Qays

Arab poet from the pre-Islamic period (Jahiliya period) between 500 and 540. Born as a prince in the Kingdom of Kinda, his free-spirited nature was at odds with tribal principles, and he ended up joining a band of outlaws. Upon hearing of the death of his father, he vowed to avenge his father and rebuild the kingdom, and evaded his pursuers to seek aid from the Byzantine Empire, but was not granted, and he died on the way home. The poems he left behind vividly depict a hedonistic life on the one hand, and vividly depict scenes of the desert's nature and animals on the other, and he is considered the founder of the long qasida poem. 前イスラム期(ジャーヒリーヤ時代)アラブの詩人。キンダ王国の王子として生まれたが，生来の奔放さが部族原理に合わず，ならず者集団に身を置く。父王の訃報に接し，その復讐および王国の再建を誓い，追手を逃れてビザンティン帝国に援助を請うが入れられず，帰途死亡。彼の残した詩は一面では快楽的な生活を，他面では砂漠の自然や動物の鮮明な情景を活写しており，長詩カシーダの確立者と見なされている。【堀内勝】
