An Irish monk. Widely revered as the patron saint of Ireland. Born in Scotland, he was invaded by the Irish as a boy and became a slave. After returning to Ireland, he studied theology at the Abbeys of Lerins and Auxerre in France, was ordained a bishop, and evangelized Ireland, which at the time believed in the pagan Druid religion, converting most of the people to Christianity and building many churches and monasteries. He evangelized with a large group of priests, choirboys, livestock farmers, farmers, foresters, blacksmiths, tailors, builders, wine makers, and stonemasons. He is said to have picked a clover, which is his saintly symbol, and preached about the Trinity. In his later years, he wrote a book called "Confessions," which records his life as a missionary. His feast day is March 17th. Lough Derg in central Ireland, where he lived a life of meditation and prayer, is a famous pilgrimage site.
