Exhaust brake

Exhaust brake

Automobile brakes close the exhaust pipe to increase back pressure, lower engine speed, and use compression resistance to control speed. There are two types of automobile brakes: those that actively and suddenly reduce speed, and those that gradually reduce speed. Drum brakes and disc brakes are the former, while engine brakes, which close the accelerator to reduce engine speed and use compression resistance, are the latter. Exhaust brakes are a further development of the engine brake concept, and are used mainly in medium and larger trucks and buses with large inertial mass, but are not found in passenger cars.
