A descendant of the Armenian nobles who brought Christianity to Armenia. Known as the "Enlightened One." Gregory grew up in Cappadocia and returned to his homeland around 280, where he succeeded in converting King Tiridates (Trdats) III, who returned to Armenia around the same time. Thus, Armenia became the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as its state religion in the early 4th century. Gregory returned to Cappadocia again, where he was ordained a bishop by the Bishop of Caesarea. After returning to his homeland, he was appointed Catholicos, head of the Armenian Church, by the king.

アルメニアにキリスト教を伝えたアルメニア貴族の末裔。〈開明者〉と称される。カッパドキアに育ち，280年ころ故国に帰り，同じころアルメニアに帰国した国王ティリダテス(トルダト)3世の改宗に成功した。かくしてアルメニアは，4世紀初頭に世界で初めてキリスト教を国教として受容した。グレゴリオスは再びカッパドキアに行き，カエサレア主教によって主教に叙階され，帰国後，国王によってアルメニア教会の首長カトリコスに任命された。
