240 koro-332 A descendant of the Armenian nobles who brought Christianity to Armenia. Known as the "Enlightened One." Gregory grew up in Cappadocia and returned to his homeland around 280, where he succeeded in converting King Tiridates (Trdats) III, who returned to Armenia around the same time. Thus, Armenia became the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as its state religion in the early 4th century. Gregory returned to Cappadocia again, where he was ordained a bishop by the Bishop of Caesarea. After returning to his homeland, he was appointed Catholicos, head of the Armenian Church, by the king.
