A city in northwestern Turkey facing the Gulf of Izmit, which leads to the Sea of Marmara. The capital of Kocaeli Province. Population 276,000 (1994). Founded in 264 BC by Nicomedes I of the Bithynian Kingdom as its capital on a site then called Astakos. Its ancient name was Nicomedia. During the Roman period, it was once the royal castle of Emperor Diocletian. It is a distribution center for agricultural products, and is also home to thriving industries such as chemicals, oil refining, and papermaking. トルコ北西部,マルマラ海に続くイズミト湾に面する都市。コジャエリ県の県都。人口27万6000(1994)。前264年,アスタコスとよばれた地にビテュニア王国のニコメデス1世が首都として建設した町。古代の名はニコメディア。ローマ時代には,一時ディオクレティアヌス帝の王城もおかれた。農産物の集散地であり,また化学,石油精製,製紙などの工業も盛んである。オスマン帝国時代の16世紀に建造された大モスクが残っている。
