Black Muslim

A secret society of black (African-American) people in the United States. It is also called the Nation of Islam. Although details about its founder, W.D. Fard, are not known, Elijah Muhammad (1897-?) became its leader after 1930 and was based in Chicago. It is a representative organization of black nationalism that preaches separation of whites and blacks and superiority of blacks, and is distinct from so-called civil rights organizations.

アメリカ合衆国の秘密結社的な黒人(アフリカ系アメリカ人)団体。ネーション･オブ･イスラムNation of Islamとも呼ばれる。創立者のW.D.ファードについて詳細はわからないが，1930年以降はシカゴを中心に，エライジャ･ムハンマドElijah Muhammad(1897‐？)が指導者となった。白人と黒人の分離，および黒人の優越性を説くブラック･ナショナリズムの代表的な組織で，いわゆる公民権団体とは一線を画している。
