1903‐75 A prominent South Indian politician and popular leader. Born in Ramanadapuram district. A member of the Nadar caste, whose traditional occupation was palm wine brewing. After dropping out of primary school, he apprenticed as a merchant under his parents' family. At the age of 17, he became involved in politics. He became a member of the Legislative Council in 1937 and chairman of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee in 1940. He served as Chief Minister of Madras from 1954 to 1963, and as chairman of the All India Congress Party in 1963. As a follower of Gandhi, he is deeply revered by the Tamil people.
