A prominent South Indian politician and popular leader. Born in Ramanadapuram district. A member of the Nadar caste, whose traditional occupation was palm wine brewing. After dropping out of primary school, he apprenticed as a merchant under his parents' family. At the age of 17, he became involved in politics. He became a member of the Legislative Council in 1937 and chairman of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee in 1940. He served as Chief Minister of Madras from 1954 to 1963, and as chairman of the All India Congress Party in 1963. As a follower of Gandhi, he is deeply revered by the Tamil people.

南インドの著名な政治家，大衆指導者。ラーマナーダプラム県に生まれる。ヤシ酒造を伝統的職業とするナダール･カーストNadār出身。小学校中退後，親籍の下で商人の徒弟奉公。17歳で政治活動に身を投じる。1937年立法参事会議員，40年タミル･ナードゥ国民会議派委員会議長。54‐63年にはマドラス州首相，63年には全インド国民会議派委員長をつとめる。ガンディーの信奉者として，タミルの民衆から深い敬愛をうけている。
