A three-volume history book about the end of the Edo period written by Date Chihiro, a feudal retainer of the Kishu Domain. It was completed in 1848 (Kaei 1). It was first published in 1873 (Meiji 6) at the request of Chihiro's son Mutsu Munemitsu and others. This book is a general history of Japan from the time of Emperor Jimmu to the establishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate, divided into three periods, the "Reign of Bones," the "Reign of Offices," and the "Reign of Names," from a unique perspective of the transition of social and political systems, and offers a historical perspective appropriate for the period of change that was the end of the Edo period. In other words, the historical perspective of this book, which combines agnosticism and realistic flexibility, has in effect excluded transcendental absolutes and principles from the historical world, and is considered to have a historical significance that connects traditional historiography with Meiji enlightenment historiography.
