An American film production and distribution company. One of Hollywood's "Big Five." In 1935, Fox, founded in 1915, and 20th Century Pictures, founded in 1933 by Darryl Francis Zanuck (1902-1979), merged. In 1953, they were the first to adopt CinemaScope. They had success with major productions such as "The King and I," but also many failures, and the company's management was in trouble after the huge failure of the blockbuster "Cleopatra." After that, they had hits such as "The Sound of Music" and "Planet of the Apes," but in 1970 they fell into the red by $77 million. After that, they seemed to make a temporary comeback with "Star Wars" and other films. However, the limits of a private company were reached, and in 1981 they were merged with United Television, and are now under the umbrella of News Corporation.

米国の映画制作・配給会社。ハリウッドの〈ビッグ・ファイブ〉の一つ。1915年設立のフォックス社とザナックDarryl Francis Zanuck〔1902-1979〕が1933年設立した20世紀映画社が1935年合併。1953年にシネマスコープを他社にさきがけて採用した。《王様と私》など大作で成功したが，失敗も多く，超大作といわれた《クレオパトラ》での大失敗で経営が傾く。その後《サウンド・オブ・ミュージック》や《猿の惑星》などヒット作もあったが，1970年には7700万ドルの赤字に陥った。その後は《スター・ウォーズ》などで一時巻き返したかにみえた。しかし，プライベート・カンパニーの限界がつき1981年にはユナイテッド・テレビジョン社に合併され，現在はニューズ・コーポレーションの傘下に入っている。
