Year of death: Tempo 11 (1840) Year of birth: Tenmei 2 (1782) A mountaineering monk in the late Edo period and the founder of Mt. Yari. Born in Kawachi, Shinkawa County, Etchu Province (Toyama Prefecture), his name was Iwamatsu, and his family home was a dojo for the Ikko sect of Buddhism. At the age of 14, he left his village to work as an apprentice, and at the age of 19, he became a monk. He studied under Kenbutsu at Tennoji Temple and Hosenji Temple (Jodo sect) in Settsu Province (Osaka Prefecture), where he was ordained and given the Buddhist name Iwabutsu. He moved to Ichinenji Temple in Shimotoba, Fushimi, Yamashiro Province (Kyoto Prefecture), and changed his Buddhist name to Banryu. He traveled around the country as a nembutsu practitioner, and three years later, in 1823, he restored Mt. Kasagatake in Hida Province (Gifu Prefecture), which had been founded by Enku. At the summit, a sea of clouds spread out to the west, hiding the tip of Mt. Yari, which was blazing in the setting sun, and a rainbow ring shone in the mist, and it is said that Amida Buddha appeared before him. In the same year, he aspired to be the founder of Mt. Yatsugatake, and with Nakata Matajiro as his guide, he succeeded in climbing the mountain and enshrined the Amida Buddha statue. In 1840, he established the mountain by hanging iron chains and iron ladders from the top of Mt. Yari.
