Born: 1897, Bristol [Died]1965. British medieval legal historian. Studied at the University of London and the University of Cambridge. Became a research associate at Harvard University in 1921, then a lecturer and assistant professor there. From 1931 to 1963, he was a professor at the London School of Economics. From 1948 to 1952, he was president of the Royal Historical Society. He is known for his many contributions to medieval legal history. His main works include A Concise History of the Common Law (1929), "Legislation of Edward I" (49), "Early English Legal Literature" (58), and "Edward I and Criminal Law" (59).
