A general term for celestial bodies that emit infrared light. Also called infrared stars. In the early 1960s, R.B. Leighton and G. Neugebauer of California Institute of Technology conducted all-sky observations at a wavelength of 2 μm and discovered many celestial bodies with very strong infrared radiation. Subsequent spectral observations revealed that many of these objects were low-temperature objects with temperatures below 1000 K. It is believed that this radiation is caused by dust particles (interstellar dust) surrounding the stars absorbing the starlight and then re-emitting it as infrared light with longer wavelengths.
